Evening Prayer Readings Tuesday after Trinity 19

The Psalter

Psalm 104

The One Hundred Fourth Psalm

Benedic, anima mea.

PRAISE the LORD, O my soul: * O LORD my God, thou art become exceeding glorious; thou art clothed with majesty and honour.
Thou deckest thyself with light as it were with a garment, * and spreadest out the heavens like a curtain.
Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters, * and maketh the clouds his chariot, and walketh upon the wings of the wind.
He maketh his angels winds, * and his ministers a flaming fire.
He laid the foundations of the earth, * that it never should move at any time.
Thou coveredst it with the deep like as with a garment; * the waters stand above the hills.
At thy rebuke they flee; * at the voice of thy thunder they haste away.
They go up as high as the hills, and down to the valleys beneath; * even unto the place which thou hast appointed for them.
Thou hast set them their bounds, which they shall not pass, * neither turn again to cover the earth.
He sendeth the springs into the rivers, * which run among the hills.
All beasts of the field drink thereof, * and the wild asses quench their thirst.
Beside them shall the fowls of the air have their habitation, * and sing among the branches.
He watereth the hills from above; * the earth is filled with the fruit of thy works.
 He bringeth forth grass for the cattle, * and green herb for the service of men;
That he may bring food out of the earth, and wine that maketh glad the heart of man; * and oil to make him a cheerful countenance, and bread to strengthen man's heart.
 The trees of the LORD also are full of sap; * even the cedars of Lebanon which he hath planted;
Wherein the birds make their nests; * and the firtrees are a dwelling for the stork.
The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; * and so are the stony rocks for the conies.
He appointed the moon for certain seasons, * and the sun knoweth his going down.
Thou makest darkness that it may be night; * wherein all the beasts of the forest do move.
The lions, roaring after their prey, * do seek their meat from God.
The sun ariseth, and they get them away together, * and lay them down in their dens.
Man goeth forth to his work, and to his labour, * until the evening.
O LORD, how manifold are thy works! * in wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy riches.
So is the great and wide sea also; * wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.
There go the ships, and there is that leviathan, * whom thou hast made to take his pastime therein.
These wait all upon thee, * that thou mayest give them meat in due season.
When thou givest it them, they gather it; * and when thou openest thy hand, they are filled with good.
When thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: * when thou takest away their breath, they die, and are turned again to their dust.
When thou lettest thy breath go forth, they shall be made; * and thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
The glorious majesty of the LORD shall endure for ever; * the LORD shall rejoice in his works.
The earth shall tremble at the look of him; * if he do but touch the hills, they shall smoke.
I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being.
And so shall my words please him: * my joy shall be in the LORD.
As for sinners, they shall be consumed out of the earth, * and the ungodly shall come to an end.
Praise thou the LORD, O my soul. * Praise the LORD.

The First Lesson

Job 38:1-11, 16-18

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it, And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed? Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth? Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death? Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.

The Second Lesson

St. Matthew 17:1-13

And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Prayers and Collects

ALMIGHTY God, who hast promised to hear the petitions of those who ask in thy Son's Name; We beseech thee mercifully to incline thine ears to us who have now made our prayers and supplications unto thee; and grant that those things which we have faithfully asked according to thy will, may effectually be obtained, to the relief of our necessity, and to the setting forth of thy glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LIGHTEN our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity

O GOD, forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee; Mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Francis of Assisi - 4 October - Friar

MOST high, almighty, and good Lord: Grant thy people grace to renounce gladly the vanities of this world, that, after the example of blessed Francis, we may for love of thee delight in all thy creatures, with perfectness of joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Tuesday Evening Prayer

O eternal and merciful God, God of all riches, who art in heaven, I most heartily thank Thee for Thy great mercy and paternal providence by which Thou hast again permitted me to end this day in the enjoyment of health. And since I, alas! have not spent this day to Thy praise and honor, and the welfare of my neighbor, inasmuch as my depraved nature is always inclined more to evil than to good, help, Thou faithful God, that I who am conceived and born in sin, may recognize my infirmity and become a partaker of Thy heavenly grace, and teach me to think much and often of my end, that I may prepare myself for it in true repentance, and when it approaches may depart from this world of trouble full of consolation and blessedness, and with all believing Christians be translated into Thy heavenly paradise. In the meantime, as long as I sojourn on earth, take me into Thy almighty protection and mercifully keep and preserve me from all harm and danger of body and soul, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Thy dear Son. Amen.
